IELTS Preparation Course

Take the Intensive IELTS Preparation course at inlingua Vancouver if you want to pass this exam, learn a lot of English and gain acceptance to a college or university.

Every year, IELTS tests over two million candidates. IELTS is now the world’s most popular high stakes English-language test for study, work and migration.

IELTS, or 'International English Language Testing System', is an international standardised test of English language proficiency. It is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, the British Council and IDP Education Pty Ltd, and was established in 1989.

There are two versions of the IELTS: the Academic Version and the General Training Version:

- The Academic Version is intended for those who want to enrol in universities and other institutions of higher education and for professionals such as medical doctors and nurses who want to study or practice in an English-speaking country.

- The General Training Version is intended for those planning to undertake non-academic training or to gain work experience, or for immigration purposes.

It is generally acknowledged that the reading and writing tests for the Academic Version are more difficult than those for the General Training Version, due to the differences in the level of intellectual and academic rigour between the two versions.

IELTS is accepted by more than 8,000 organisations in over 135 countries: Universities, schools, training colleges, tertiary institutes / Government departments and agencies / Professional and industry bodies / Multinational companies and employers. It is also accepted to demonstrate English proficiency for immigration to Australia and Canada.

An IELTS result or Test Report Form (TRF) is valid for two years.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular high stakes English-language test for study, work and migration, with more than 2 million tests taken every year.

IELTS assesses all of your English skills — reading, writing, listening and speaking — and is designed to reflect real life use of English — at study, at work, and at play.

The IELTS test is developed by some of the world’s leading experts in language assessment. It has an excellent international reputation, and is accepted by over 8,000 organisations worldwide, including schools, universities, employers, immigration authorities and professional bodies. IELTS is the most widely accepted English language test that uses a one-on-one speaking test to assess your English communication skills. This means that you are assessed by having a real-life conversation with a real person. This is the most effective and natural way of testing your English conversation skills.

Course Requirements

For the IELTS 6.5 course, students who complete inlingua level 3B (upper intermediate) or new students who place at 4A (advanced) can take it. Lower level students will take first general English ESL lessons.

For overseas students to know if they will be accepted for the IELTS 6.5 course, a minimum level of 4A is necessary on the inlingua Online Test. On the first day of the course, all students will take a placement test to validate their results.

Testing and Examination

In our IELTS courses, students have one practice exam per week. We follow the same structure of the official test. Students receive feedback from our instructors on their progress and areas of improvement.

For the official IELTS test, all candidates must complete four Modules - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking - to obtain a band score, which is shown on the IELTS Test Report Form (TRF). All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules, while the Reading and Writing Modules differ depending on whether the candidate is taking the Academic or General Training Versions of the Test.

The total test duration is around 2 hours and 45 minutes for Listening, Reading and Writing modules.

  • Listening: 40 minutes, 30 minutes for which a recording is played centrally and additional 10 minutes for transferring answers onto the OMR answer sheet.
  • Reading: 60 minutes.
  • Writing: 60 minutes.

Note: No additional time is given for transfer of answers in Reading and Writing modules.

The first three modules - Listening, Reading and Writing (always in that order) - are completed in one day, and in fact are taken with no break in between.

The Speaking Module may be taken, at the discretion of the test centre, in the period seven days before or after the other Modules. The Speaking component assesses your use of spoken English, and takes between 11 and 14 minutes to complete.

The tests are designed to cover the full range of ability from non-user to expert user.
